"An admirable new organisation called Dialogue with Islam has had the idea of getting mainstream writers to debate the issues that concern the Muslim population - but on their own doorstep, rather than in the newspapers."
Dominic Lawson (The Independent 4/8/2006)

"A very proper British debate...I liked best the moments when the dialogue was an exchange of emotion, an admission of feelings....But that night we were all trying to live and let live. It was very British. It was actually fun."
Libby Purves (The Times, Dec. 2006)

Afghanistan – Which Way Forward?

Thursday 22nd October 2009 Time: 6:00pm

When recently asked in London why the situation in Afghanistan isn't getting better- after eight years of fighting with more than 850 Americans killed - US General Stanley McChrystal admitted that far from being better things have worsened. He said:

"It's true that after eight years, after a lot of tremendous effort, a lot of expenditures, loss of good people, many indicators, and many things are worse".

With such dire assessment how should the US and her allies continue its war in Afghanistan?

Or is it time to accept that this war is "Mission Impossible?"

To debate these issues we have invited a distinguished panel – join us on what promises to be a burning debate.

Lord Brian Griffiths

I greatly enjoyed the evening and was extremely impressed with the people whom I met. You organized a superb event and are a great ambassador for the Muslim community.... Any debate on monetary issues draws on what I would term, the 'exotic element'. This goes with the turf. That apart I thought the questions were thoughtful, well stated and interesting.

Evan Davis

The debate was a fascinating departure from the normal (rather narrow) areas of economic controversy in which I tend to get involved. It veered between several very different strands -- the technicalities of banking sector balance sheets; the ethics of debt, and enticing people to consume; the interpretation of different religious texts; and various (impractical) schemes for providing the functions of modern currencies without modern currency.

Evan Davis (Economics Editor for the BBC)

Edwina Currie

This debate was a most interesting and informative event for me - I learned far more than I could impart, and feel privileged to have been invited.
