"An admirable new organisation called Dialogue with Islam has had the idea of getting mainstream writers to debate the issues that concern the Muslim population - but on their own doorstep, rather than in the newspapers."
Dominic Lawson (The Independent 4/8/2006)

"A very proper British debate...I liked best the moments when the dialogue was an exchange of emotion, an admission of feelings....But that night we were all trying to live and let live. It was very British. It was actually fun."
Libby Purves (The Times, Dec. 2006)

MP Expenses, Credit Crunch and Rampant Consumerism – How do we cure greed in our Society?

Thursday 23rd July 2009 Time: 6:30pm

According "The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms -- Greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind. And Greed -- you mark my words -- will fix that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA" (Quoted from Gordon Gecko speech in the Hit 80’s Film: Wall Street).

"Greed is good" is the mantra that emerged in the hedonistic 1980’s, when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister.

Yet now, what have been accepted norms since then are now a major cause of concern, as MPs milk the system and bankers treat the stock market like a casino - causing the biggest Financial Crash in living memory.

It seems we're now discovering, unremitting greed has a price – which millions of ordinary people are now paying - in devalued pensions, higher mortgage rates, vulnerable savings and job losses.

So, is there a cure to this natural instinct of greed or was Gordon Gecko right – ‘Greed is the essence of the evolutionary spirit’?

Here to discuss this burning issue we have invited two esteemed speakers.

I found the discussion very illuminating, and I would recommend others attending. You want to make clear, as you did the other night, that Dialogue with Islam is free standing, is not a front for any other group... I thought the audience was the best part of the evening: it is true that some were hostile, but by and large they seemed willing to listen to my answers patiently and respectfully and that is all anyone can ask of any audience...
Good luck with your work. You were very kind to have us over to your event. I enjoyed it and I enjoyed meeting you.

Philip C Bobbitt (Former US Director for Intelligence)

Philip C Bobbitt was invited to speak on "The 'War on Terror': Does it make Sense?".

Lord Norman Lamont

Ex Chancellor of the Exchequer

I found the evening very interesting and was impressed by the seriousness of most of the que-stions.I thought the event was well organised...I was very impressed by the seriousness of the speakers and their thoughtfulness.

I would recommend non-Muslims to speak and thought the Chairman was fine. I know he thought I talked too much.

For the future - I would suggest you ought to tackle Islam and Secularism and Islam and Democracy, and the position of women under Islam.

Lord Norman Lamont was invited to speak on "Dealing with the aftermath of : 9/11 and 7/7.

I greatly enjoyed the meeting. The audience were combative not hostile. All credit must go the organisers as dialogue of this kind is essential in all our interests. A slightly longer time might have been useful as the dialogue had only just begun and there were several people anxious to contribute with question or statements.

Sir Malcolm Rifkind (former British Foreign Secretary)

Sir Malcolm Rifkind was invited to speak on "War On Terror: Winning Hearts and Minds".
